The strategic partnering (SPA) agreement between Leonardo, the Royal Air Force and UK Ministry of Defence further strengthens Leonardo's role as the MOD's partner of choice for protecting air platforms and their crews.
Leonardo has more than a century's heritage and expertise designing and producing air platform protection solutions that keep aircrews and their aircraft safe around the world.
Today, thousands of highly-skilled Leonardo UK scientists and engineers are dedicated to delivering high-tech protective electronics for UK Armed Forces aircraft including RAF Typhoons, Shadow R1 surveillance aircraft, E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning aircraft and the majority of the UK's helicopter fleet including the AW159 Wildcat, AW101 Merlin and Apache AH-64E.
The UK APP solution will incorporate equipment that can detect, identify and defeat threats to an aircraft. Leonardo’s electronic warfare experts in Luton will integrate the system, which will be controlled by the company’s smart defensive aids system computer, called the Modular Advanced Platform Protection System (MAPPS) controller. This can independently evaluate threats and automatically launch life-saving countermeasures.
