What did you study at school?

English, Maths, History, and Religious, Moral and Philosophical studies. After school, I started a business management degree with the Open University – which led me into the business route.

What made you choose an apprenticeship as a career route?

Having previously lacked the confidence to undergo a degree course at university straight from school, I believe that an apprenticeship was the right career path for me. I have been able to work on my own personal development and build relationships throughout the business. Working for Leonardo has helped me gain professional operational experience, alongside further education in the form of my Higher National Certificate (HNC) Business Management course, which I hope will enhance my career opportunities within the company.

What is your day-to-day role like? Has it changed much due to the pandemic?

I carry out a number of diverse activities on a daily basis which continue to hold my interest and enhance my enthusiasm. As a project planner, I produce and maintain plans that drive the project forward and allow the team to work to a schedule. Communication is key to ensuring close partnership and networking with the different functions – such as project management, procurement and engineering – which allows for a successful and smooth delivery of the overall plan. I am responsible for data analysis and providing the correct information in the various reports that are required by all relevant parties.

What are the interesting projects you worked on during your apprenticeship?

I worked on a number of interesting projects throughout my apprenticeship, mainly in the Typhoon radar sector.

What was the best thing about your apprenticeship? Did anything surprise you?

I was really surprised at how many people are willing to help apprentices and pass on their knowledge. A lot of long-standing employees started as apprentices themselves at Leonardo, so I have felt especially supported.

What has been your biggest achievement at Leonardo so far?

It is difficult to narrow it down to one. However, I would say how I have developed and gained confidence in all areas of not only my professional, but also my personal life. I have gained transferable skills and knowledge that I will be able to use throughout my career, and as a result I have kick-started my career progression.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to people looking to make a first step in their career?

I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship. I think schools nowadays push for students to go to university, but there is a real opportunity for people to gain experience as well as qualifications through apprenticeships (without the student debt).
