The European Union’s CPS4EU project was created to promote knowledge and use of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in all industrial sectors that can benefit from them in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Leonardo’s role in the CPS4EU consortium is as a System Integrator, focusing on the Industry Automation sector, which is increasingly strategic for European competitiveness.
CPS facilitate the dynamic and real-time exchange of information between the physical and cyber worlds. For example, automated production lines where there are problems or errors in one of the machines in the line, yet the system can still make autonomous decisions by self-regulating the production flow and returning only information to the operators.
The growing spread of CPS makes them important players in Industry 4.0 and in the process of physical-logical convergence (or CyPhy). This is the dynamic favoured by a pervasive digitisation, which leads to an intersection between the physical and cyber worlds.
Through the use of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence, cyber-physical systems are therefore game-changers, capable of improving the competitiveness of the companies that adopt them and the effectiveness of the entities that use them. Driven by this changing landscape, CPS4EU was established, co-financed by the European Union and the MISE .
The project is a European collaboration between companies, universities and research centres for the development of a strategic and enabling innovative sector. Specifically, in addition to being a system integrator for the application of CPS in Industry Automation, the Leonardo Cyber Security Division is also responsible for creating use cases proposed by Leonardo's Aerostructures and Aircraft divisions. It also deals with experiments on data analysis with a view to predictive maintenance, process parameter monitoring, automation and product quality.
Leonardo has recently passed the annual project review, receiving particular appreciation for the work it is doing in terms of design content and results obtained.
